Who am I?
Hi, my name is Joseph Bugeja and I am from Malta, a small island in the centre of the Mediterranean sea.I started drawing from a very young age, first on my parents' house walls, with pencils and crayons and then I upgraded to sauces, mustards and everything that could have been used instead of the common painting mediums. As long as I remember I have always been fascinated with comics and especially with their artwork, mostly Marvel and DC comics. Whenever I used to go shopping with my mother, I would stop and gaze at the comics on the shelves at the newsagents. That's where my comic collection started, I used and still buy comics not for their stories, in fact very rarely I read them, but I buy them for the artwork. This influenced me to begin creating superheroes, creatures, monsters, etc, in other words, Fantasy Art. I consider myself lucky that when I was attending a Four Year Diploma Course in Fine Art at the School of Arts of Malta, I found tutors that supported and understood my interest and let me make my thesis on Fantasy Art. Quite a rarity to Pass with Honours in a Fine Art Diploma Course on this subject. Instead of just studying old masters for shading, perspective, anatomy, etc., I turned also to my collection of comics and graphic novels. My Inspirations were and still are Simon Bisley, Alex Ross, Alex Horley, Dorian Cleavenger and Frank Frazetta to name a few. |
